India can grab the No. 1 spot in T20

India will have a chance to climb to the top of the ICC T20 Teams’ Rankings table when they take on England and Pakistan in short T20 series late this month.

MS Dhoni and his Men in Blue are scheduled to play England in two T20 Internationals on December 20 and 22, before taking on the arch rivals Pakistan in an equal number of T20I fixtures next week.

India are currently ranked third on the ICC’s T20 team rankings table. However, a victory in all of the upcoming four matches, starting in Pune today, will not only propel them to the top of the table, ahead of Sri Lanka, but will also give them a five point lead over the current table topper.

Currently Sri Lanka sit at the top with 127 rating points, followed by reigning champions West Indies, who have 122 points. At the present, India trail their Asian rivals by seven points. Winning the four T20 before the end of the year would add 12 points to their account, taking them to 132, five points ahead of the Lankan Lions.

If MS Dhoni led Indian contingent manages to do so, this will be the first time they will make it to the No 1 spot on the T20I championship table since it was launched in October 2011.

However, if the 2007 World T20 champions lose at least one of the four game, the best they can hope to end 2012 is to leapfrog the incumbent T20 champs West Indies into the second place. Losing all the four matches against England and Pakistan would see India dropping to as low as seventh spot with 106 rating points.

While England (currently 4th on the table) and Pakistan (6th on the table) could hope to move a place up if they manage to defeat the Indian contingent.
