South Africa 140 for 4 in 46 overs: Part-time bowler Younis Khan rolled his arm over nicely to get rid of Hashim Amla for 37 as South Africa lost their fourth wicket. South Africa 107 for 2 in 34 overs: Following quick wickets of Graeme Smith, who is playing his 100th Test as captain, and Alviro Pietersen, Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla thereafter batted with great care to take the hosts past the three-figure mark. South Africa 68 for 2 in 25 overs: Pakistan went into lunch at 68 for 2 in 25 overs. Hashim Amla (7) and Jacques Kallis (15) were at the crease.

South Africa 50 for 2 in 20 overs: Umar Gul brought one away to induce an edge off Smith's bat and wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed does the rest behind the wickets.

South Africa 46 for 1 in 19 overs: Left-armer Junaid Khan squared up Petersen with a slightly rising delivery as Mohd Hafeez took a comfortable catch at third slip.

South Africa 25 for 0 in 11 overs: The hosts made a watchful start to the first Test against Pakistan after Smith opted to bat in his 100th match in charge. Smith collected two boundaries in his 17 off 33 deliveries while Petersen was batting on seven off the same number of balls.

Toss:
In his 100th Test in charge and on his 32nd birthday, South African captain Graeme Smith won the toss on and chose to bat on a green-tinged Wanderers surface under clear skies against Pakistan as the series got underway on Friday.
South Africa made one change to the XI that clinched the recent series against New Zealand 2-0 at home, with a fit Vernon Philander coming back into the side in place of Rory Kleinveldt. The management had toyed with the idea of an all-pace attack but decided to keep Robin Peterson due to Pakistan's susceptibility against left-arm spin.
Pakistan made a return to Test cricket after more than six months and handed debuts to the 23-year-old opener Nasir Jamshed on the back of an impressive limited-overs performances in India, as well as to left-arm quick Rahat Ali. The 24-year-old Ali, who has played one ODI, was added to the squad as cover due to the conditions and duration of the tour and found himself making his debut ahead of the 7ft-1n fast bowler Mohammad Irfan.
