of Chris Morris and Sachitra Senanayake bagging $625,000 each and rookie fast bowler Kane Richardson being valued at $700,000. It was a big day of spending, with $11.89 million spent on 37 of 101 players in less than five hours of bidding.
Maxwell, who has played nine ODIs and Twenty20 internationals, saw his value raise the most and was the biggest draw of the day. Mumbai opened the bidding for Maxwell at his base price of $200,000 and soon found themselves in a keen tussle with new entrant Sunrisers Hyderabad that stopped at a whopping $1million. Mumbai also forked out big bucks for the uncapped Western Australia fast bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile ($450,000) whose base price was $100,000 while adding Ricky Ponting and Phillip Hughes to their squad.
After the initial round of bidding, of which Ajantha Mendis ($725,000), Abhishek Nayar and Thisara Perera ($675,000) and (Dirk Nannes ($600,000) were the most valued players, 20 additional players went under the hammer. Of these, South African allrounder Morris' name drew much interest from Mumbai, Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore and from a base of $20,000 the 25-year-old - who has played just one Twenty20 international - went to Chennai for a huge $625,000. Senanayake, a 27-year-old offspinner with seven ODIs and two T20Is under his belt, was snapped up by Kolkata Knight Riders for $625,000 after seeing his stock rise from $50,000 in a hurry. Richardson, a 21-year-old fast bowler from Adelaide who made his ODI debut last month, found himself valued at $700,000 by Pune Warriors India from an original $100,000.Pune pulled out few stops in flexing their fiscal muscle, also forking out $725,000 for Mendis and $625,000 for Abhishek Nayar. The bidding for Mendis began at $50,000 but within seconds the Sri Lankan spinner found his name rapidly increasing in value as Pune, Mumbai and Kolkata raising the prices in a hurry. A close fight between current IPL winners Kolkata and Pune end with the latter buying Mendis for nearly 15 times his base price. Nayar, who played the last of his three ODIs in 2009 but who had an outstanding 2012-13 Ranji Trophy season, saw five franchises bid for him. From a base price of $100,000 the 29-year-old allrounder went to Pune after stiff competition from Bangalore and Hyderabad.
Bangalore bailed out of going for Nayar, but stretched their purse to acquire five pace-bowling options out of which Saurashtra's Jaydev Unadkat cost the most at $525,000 which was way up from his base price of $100,000. RP Singh was a significant gainer after fetching a price of $400,000 from a base price of $100,000, while West Indies fast bowler Ravi Rampaul profited from a bid of $290,000 when his base was just $50,000. Pankaj Singh ($150,000) and Australia allrounder Moises Henriques ($300,000) were the other bowling resources that Bangalore added to its squad.
The latest IPL franchise, Hyderabad, opened their purses to acquire two allrounders in Perera and Darren Sammy. From a starting point of $50,000, Perera made a stunning jump to $475,000 in less than a minute before he was eventually out-bid by Hyderabad. Sammy, who led West Indies to the ICC World Twenty20 title in 2012, went for $450,000. Hyderabad also bought Sudeep Tyagi and Nathan McCullum for their base prices of $100,000 each and Clint McKay for $200,000.
From the marquee section comprising four players, current and former Australia captains Ponting and Michael Clarke were bought for their base prices of $400,000 by Mumbai and Pune respectively. South African offspinner Johan Botha was purchased for $450,000 by Delhi Daredevils. The fourth marquee player was RP who found much interest from Rajasthan Royals, Hyderabad and his new owners, Bangalore.
Chennai's focus was on buying fast bowlers and before spending big on Morris they put down $600,000 for Dirk Nannes while getting in Ben Laughlin for his base price of $20,000. They later added rookie West Indies pacer Jason Holder for $20,000. Kings XI Punjab bought just two players - former India pace bowler Manpreet Gony for $500,000 and Luke Pomersbach for $300,000. Rajasthan snapped up Fidel Edwards ($210,000) and James Faulkner ($400,000).
Among those players who went unsold were Vernon Philander, Upul Tharanga, Martin Guptill, Herschelle Gibbs, Aaron Finch, Matthew Wade, Doug Bollinger and Kevin O'Brien. For a full list of the sold and unsold players, click here.
